The Problem with Coaching is...

Scott Potter • 1 February 2022

So, you want to improve your abilities and your performance.  What or who do you turn to first?  A colleague? A mentor?  Online or classroom training courses?  Or a coach?

Executives and board members often turn to a coach first.  But this isn’t true for all of us.  Sometimes it’s simply down to cost -  the cost of a personal coach is far greater than a training course or some form of internal mentoring scheme.  Whilst this is true to a large extent, so too is the return on investment.  And costs aren’t always prohibitive when compared to some courses.

So, the problem with coaching is that it’s often overlooked and misunderstood.

One to one coaching - face to face.

All forms of personal development approaches and intervention styles have their place and it’s important to understand the individual’s needs.

So often though, the main factor preventing someone from truly excelling is not a lack of skills or knowledge, but dealing with pressure, with complexity, with seemingly no-win situations and sometimes simply a lack of energy that can go as far as total burn-out.  Even when we’re in a good place, cognitive biases and broken thinking patterns (aka, being human) still hamper our performance.  Some Performance Coaches teach techniques and help you build new habits to overcome these intrinsic human traits.

We tend to associate sports coaches with improving technique, providing structure, routine, building positive habits and so on.  But we don’t see ‘business coaches’ as doing the same.  Our colleages at VFS Coaching have a great page on their website on this very point, explaining the similarities between a Personal Trainer and VFS Performance Coach.

Personal Performance Coaching (which includes Executive & Leadership coaching) is the most effective method of unlocking someone's potential.

The problem with coaching is, not all coaches are qualified... not experienced in business... not able to keep quiet.

We set up the VFS Performance Coaching practice to complement the main consulting arm of Value Flow Solutions, which specialises in helping businesses to perform and excel.  Our coaching services have the same goal.

We stay true to the principles of pure, non-directive coaching to ensure that we leverage its true power in developing personal resilience and resourcefulness… things that no other style of personal development intervention can achieve to the same degree.  But, our coaches are also experts in their field and as such can teach and mentor.  We do this with skill and care to preserve the magic of coaching.  Until you’ve experienced some coaching sessions with a qualified and experienced Performance Coach, for yourself, it’s impossible to understand how enabling and empowering they are.

The problem with coaching is that it’s often overlooked and misunderstood.  Don’t confuse it with life coaching and don’t assume it’s just meandering conversations.  Great coaches really help you perform and to feel more fulfilled.

Consider investing in a personal performance coach.

What is meant by systems and systems thinking? We’re not talking about computer systems or management control systems. What we are looking at is interconnectedness and viewing an organisation as a dynamic process.
